Description

Reverse osmosis membrane (RO Membrane) is a material that uses high pressure (1-10 MPa) to separate solutes through a semipermeable membrane. It has a desalination rate of >99% and a flux of 10-50 L/m²·h. It is widely used in seawater desalination and industrial pure water. It uses a thin layer of polyamide (PA) or cellulose ester (CA) composite membrane with a thickness of 0.1-0.2 μm and a pore size of<0.5 nm. It is prepared by interfacial polymerization (TMC and MPD reaction, thickness uniformity<5%). For example, in seawater desalination, the salt content of membrane water is<500 mg/L and the energy consumption is<3 kWh/m³; in industry, its purified water resistivity is >10 MΩ·cm. Production needs to pass salt permeability tests (<1%) and pressure resistance tests (>5 MPa).

The advantages of reverse osmosis membranes are high desalination efficiency and stability. Supporters believe that they are energy efficient (50%-70% lower than distillation). For example, PA membranes improve flux (>50 L/m²·h) by optimizing pores; anti-fouling coatings reduce membrane fouling (flux decline rate<5%/year). However, critics point out that the membrane is easily fouled (organic adsorption rate >10%) and needs to be cleaned regularly (every 3-6 months); it has high requirements for influent (SDI<3), otherwise its life span is shortened (<3 years); in addition, high-pressure operation may cause membrane damage (breakage rate<0.5%).

In the future, reverse osmosis membranes may focus more on anti-fouling and energy efficiency. The development of nano-coatings (anti-fouling rate >95%) or low-pressure membranes (operating pressure<1 MPa) may extend life; the potential in the field of water treatment includes supporting zero liquid discharge systems and micro-polluted water treatment (TOC<5 ppb). However, the industry needs to address the challenges of pollution control (target flux decline<2%/year) and pressure optimization (target<0.5 MPa).
