Oral Rehydration Solution - Global Industry Market Analysis Report 2020-2031

Oral rehydration solution, also known as oral rehydration salts (ORS), is an oral preparation specially developed for the prevention and treatment of dehydration. It plays an important role in the medical field, especially in pediatrics, gastroenterology and other departments. There are many causes of dehydration. Diarrhea, vomiting, high fever and excessive sweating can cause the human body to lose a lot of water and electrolytes. Oral rehydration solution can accurately replenish these missing substances and maintain the normal physiological functions of the body.

The ingredients of oral rehydration solution have been rigorously and scientifically formulated. Its core ingredients include sodium chloride (the main component of table salt), potassium chloride, sodium bicarbonate (or sodium citrate) and glucose (or sucrose). Among them, the main function of sodium chloride and potassium chloride is to replenish sodium ions and potassium ions lost due to diarrhea, vomiting and other conditions, so as to maintain the balance of electrolytes in the body. Sodium ions play a key role in maintaining extracellular fluid volume, regulating acid-base balance, and ensuring neuromuscular excitability; potassium ions play an indispensable role in maintaining intracellular fluid osmotic pressure, participating in cell metabolism, and ensuring normal heart function. Sodium bicarbonate or sodium citrate is responsible for correcting acidosis caused by dehydration and helping to regulate the acid-base balance in the body. In addition to providing a certain amount of energy to the body, glucose or sucrose can also utilize the coordinated transport mechanism of intestinal epithelial cells for glucose and sodium ion absorption, significantly improve the intestinal absorption efficiency of sodium ions and water, and promote water absorption.

From the perspective of mechanism of action, oral rehydration solution mainly relies on the absorption principle of the intestine to exert its effect. When the solution enters the intestine, the glucose and sodium ions in it enter the intestinal epithelial cells together with the help of specific transport proteins. This process will drive the passive transport of water molecules, thereby causing a large amount of water to be absorbed into the blood circulation. At the same time, other electrolyte components in the solution will also be absorbed according to the corresponding transport mechanism, thereby efficiently replenishing the water and electrolytes lost due to dehydration, effectively improving the dehydration state, and promoting the body's physiological functions to return to normal.

Oral rehydration solution has a wide range of application scenarios. Among all types of diarrheal diseases, especially diarrhea in children and infants, oral rehydration solutions are the first choice for preventing and treating dehydration. Statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO) show that the number of deaths of children worldwide due to diarrhea remains high each year, and the timely use of oral rehydration solutions can greatly reduce this mortality rate. In addition, oral rehydration solutions can also be used to replenish lost water and electrolytes to prevent dehydration after strenuous exercise or when working in a hot environment and sweating a lot. For some patients who vomit due to illness but can still take a small amount orally, oral rehydration solutions are also suitable to help them maintain the body's water and salt balance.

When preparing oral rehydration solutions, standard procedures must be strictly followed. Generally speaking, according to the requirements of the product instructions, an appropriate amount of oral rehydration salt powder should be dissolved in a specified amount of warm boiled water and stirred thoroughly. Make sure to use clean warm boiled water, and never use raw water or sugary drinks, fruit juice, etc. for dilution, because these liquids may interfere with electrolyte balance or change intestinal osmotic pressure, thereby aggravating diarrhea symptoms.

When using oral rehydration solutions, the methods are also different for patients with different degrees of dehydration. For patients with mild dehydration, it is recommended to take small amounts of fluids orally multiple times, about 5-10 ml each time, every few minutes to prevent vomiting. As the symptoms of dehydration ease, gradually increase the amount of fluid intake each time. For patients with moderate dehydration, the required amount of fluid should be accurately calculated based on body weight, and the calculated amount of fluid should be slowly fed within 4-6 hours. During the entire rehydration process, pay close attention to the changes in the patient's symptoms, observe whether the dehydration has improved, whether the vomiting has worsened, etc. If the patient has severe dehydration symptoms, such as mental depression, poor skin elasticity, sunken eye sockets, oliguria or anuria, etc., he should seek medical attention immediately. At this time, intravenous rehydration therapy may be required, and oral rehydration solution is only used as an auxiliary treatment.

It should also be noted that the prepared oral rehydration solution should be used up within the specified time, generally recommended within 24 hours, otherwise the solution may be contaminated with bacteria, affecting safety of use. For special patients with renal insufficiency, severe cardiopulmonary dysfunction, etc., it is necessary to consult a doctor's professional opinion before using oral rehydration solution, because the body's ability to regulate electrolytes in such patients may be abnormal, and improper use may worsen the condition.

In addition, there are multiple formulations of oral rehydration solution according to different clinical needs. Hypotonic oral rehydration salt solution is suitable for most diarrhea patients. Its electrolyte concentration is relatively low. While replenishing water and electrolytes, it can reduce the risk of complications such as hypernatremia. For some special cases, such as severe diarrhea and dehydration caused by cholera, a specific formula of oral rehydration solution may be used to meet the patient's needs for rapid replenishment of large amounts of water and electrolytes.

In some special medical scenarios, such as remote areas where medical resources are scarce and intravenous rehydration cannot be performed in time, the importance of oral rehydration solution is more prominent. It provides patients with a convenient and effective way to treat dehydration, which can alleviate the condition to a certain extent and buy time for subsequent medical treatment.

In short, oral rehydration solution has been widely used worldwide as a simple, efficient and economical means of preventing and treating dehydration. Correctly understanding and rationally using oral rehydration solutions is of immeasurable importance in protecting people's health, especially when dealing with dehydration problems caused by common diseases such as diarrhea.
