Matrigel is a complex mixture of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins that is derived from the basement membrane of the Engelbreth-Holm-Swarm (EHS) mouse sarcoma tumor. It is commonly used in cell culture and tissue engineering to mimic the natural environment of cells, providing a scaffold that supports cell growth, differentiation, and signaling. Matrigel contains a variety of key ECM components such as laminin, collagen IV, entactin, heparan sulfate proteoglycans, and other glycoproteins, which help to replicate the in vivo conditions needed for cells to maintain their natural behavior and function.

Matrigel is primarily used in cell culture applications to promote the growth and differentiation of various cell types, including epithelial, endothelial, and stem cells. It can be used for a range of experiments, such as studying cell migration, invasion, and adhesion, as well as for modeling complex biological processes like angiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels) and tumor growth. Due to its ability to create a more natural 3D environment for cells, Matrigel is also used in organoid cultures, where 3D structures of tissues or organs are grown for research in areas like drug testing, disease modeling, and regenerative medicine.
