Description

Helium Gas Separation Membrane is a membrane material that uses selective permeation to separate helium (He). It is usually made of polyimide (PI), polyamide (PA) or metal organic framework (MOF) composite membrane with a thickness of 10-100 μm, helium permeability>100 Barrer (1 Barrer=10⁻¹⁰ cm³·cm/cm²·s·cmHg), selectivity (He/N₂>100, He/CH₄>50), and is widely used in industrial gas purification and aerospace fuel recovery. It is prepared by solution casting (polyimide solution concentration 10%-20%) or vacuum evaporation (MOF membrane thickness<1 μm), with a pore size of 0.3-0.5 nm, matching the diameter of helium molecules (0.26 nm). For example, in rocket testing, membrane separation helium is purified from hydrogen/helium mixtures (helium content<10%) to 99.9%, reducing energy consumption (<50 kWh/m³); in semiconductor manufacturing, its purified helium is used for crystal growth (purity requirement 99.999%). Preparation requires gas permeation testing (permeability deviation<5%) and SEM (scanning electron microscopy) to detect membrane structural integrity.

The advantages of helium separation membranes are high efficiency and energy saving. Supporters believe that it is more economical than traditional cryogenic distillation (energy consumption >100 kWh/m³). For example, MOF composite membranes improve selectivity (He/CO₂>200) through pore modulation, which is suitable for the separation of complex gas mixtures; its flexible design supports modular applications (area >10 m²). However, critics point out that the membrane has limited pressure resistance (<1 MPa) and may break under high pressure (breakage rate<1%); it is sensitive to moisture (permeability drops by 10%-20% when humidity >50%) and requires pre-drying; in addition, MOF membranes are expensive (>$100 per square meter) and the preparation process is complex (high temperature annealing of 300-500°C is required).

In the future, helium separation membranes may focus more on durability and cost reduction. The development of high-pressure resistant polymers (such as PBI, with a pressure resistance of >2 MPa) or low-cost MOF synthesis (target<50 US dollars/m²) may expand applications; the potential in the aerospace and electronics fields includes supporting deep space exploration gas recovery and quantum computing helium purification (purity >99.9999%). However, the industry needs to address the challenges of moisture impact (target permeability stability<5% deviation) and process simplification (target annealing temperature<200°C).
