Global XPS Polystyrene Foaming Agent Market Growth 2026-2032
Description
The global XPS Polystyrene Foaming Agent market size is predicted to grow from US$ 418 million in 2025 to US$ 555 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.2% from 2026 to 2032.
XPS Polystyrene Foaming Agent is a gas or liquid added during the manufacturing process of XPS extruded polystyrene foam boards. It causes molten polystyrene to foam, forming a rigid foam material with closed cells, high strength, and excellent thermal insulation and moisture resistance properties. It is mainly used for building insulation (such as roofs, foundations, and exterior walls).Upstream materials include various physical/chemical gases, such as carbon dioxide, alcohol, butane, dimethyl ether (DME), and new generation low-GWP fluorides.Global sales in 2025 are projected to be approximately 106,100 tons, with an average market price of approximately US$4,026 per ton. The industry's gross profit margin is in the range of 10%–25%.
Europe has set a phase-out deadline for HFC blowing agents with a GWP ≥ 150 in XPS (and is further moving towards a comprehensive tightening of regulations on fluorinated greenhouse gas foams), effectively eliminating growth opportunities for high-GWP options in the mainstream market. This has directly driven the entire industry chain to accelerate its transition to green alternative technologies. HFO/HCFO (such as HFO-1234ze and HCFO-1233zd) and combinations of CO₂/hydrocarbons will become the main alternative solutions.
The industry currently faces challenges from technological substitution and cost pressures. While environmentally friendly alternative technologies such as carbon dioxide (CO₂), ethanol, and hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) are technically feasible, different alternatives vary in key performance characteristics such as thermal conductivity, density, and flame retardancy of foam boards, and may involve production line modifications and higher raw material costs.
