Claus process is generally adopted as the core technical route of the unit. Its working principle is mainly divided into two steps: firstly, about one-third of the volume of hydrogen sulfide is burned in the reaction furnace to generate sulfur dioxide, and then the volume ratio of residual hydrogen sulfide and generated sulfur dioxide is accurately controlled to react under the action of catalyst to finally generate elemental sulfur and water. In order to maximize the recovery rate of sulfur, modern units usually adopt multi-stage catalytic reaction and condensation separation process, the basic recovery rate can reach 95% to 98%, if combined with tail gas treatment technology such as SCOT, the total recovery rate can even be increased to more than 99.9%, so that the sulfur dioxide emission concentration in the tail gas is significantly reduced.

In order to further improve the recovery rate and meet the increasingly stringent environmental emission standards (such as China GB31570 -2015 requires that the sulfur dioxide concentration in tail gas be lower than 100 mg/m³), modern units often integrate tail gas treatment technologies such as SCOT to form a combined process, so that the total sulfur recovery rate can reach more than 99.9%. In addition, new processes such as biological desulfurization, membrane separation and SLOS low temperature oxidation are also being developed to achieve higher sulfur purity and resource recovery efficiency at lower energy consumption.
