SOFC and SOEC, or SOFCs (Solid Oxide Fuel Cells) and SOECs (Solid Oxide Electrolyzer Cells) are both electrochemical devices that utilize a solid oxide (ceramic) electrolyte, but they operate in opposite modes. SOFCs convert chemical energy directly into electrical energy, while SOECs use electrical energy to produce chemical energy, specifically hydrogen from water. Essentially, an SOEC is an SOFC operating in reverse. In 2025, global SOFC and SOEC production reached approximately 399.70 MW. The main upstream raw materials for SOFC/SOEC include the following: electrolyte materials (YSZ / ScSZ / GDC, etc.), cathode/anode materials (LSCF/LSM, NiO, composite powders/inks), bipolar plates and structural components (interconnect alloys/coated strip steel), sealing materials (glass / glass-ceramic seals, sealing frits/pastes), etc.

In the context of the turnaround in energy policy, research focusses on technologies that can be used for the decentralized production of renewable (green) hydrogen (electrolyzer) or the reconversion of hydrogen into electricity (fuel cell). Due to the high efficiency (> 80 % for cogeneration) and the good scalability (system sizes in the kW to MW range), systems based on the solid oxide cell (SOC) will be the key technology for achieving the climate targets. SOCs contain a dense oxygen-ion conducting ceramic as electrolyte. The electrolyte is embedded between a porous electrode layer composed of a ceramic-metal composite at the fuel side of the cell and a nanoporous oxygen ion and electronic conducting ceramic layer at the air electrode of the cell.
