The global Ruthenium Foil market size is predicted to grow from US$ million in 2025 to US$ million in 2031; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of %from 2025 to 2031.
Ruthenium is a lustrous silver metal that is impervious to air, water and acids, but is soluble in molten alkali. Extraction of metals is achieved by several techniques; for example, extraction of mixed platinum group metals by dissolution in aqua regia, followed by processing of various soluble and insoluble fractions. Metals have limited applications; as a pure metal, ruthenium is very hard and brittle, making it difficult to machine. It is relatively inactive and is used as an alloying element, together with platinum and palladium to produce alloys that improve wear resistance, and together with titanium to improve the corrosion resistance of materials. Ruthenium foils are presented in flakes as pure metal and metal alloy flakes. Ruthenium foil has a high melting point and good corrosion and chemical resistance. Due to their fragile nature, some foils are coated with acrylic or polyester support on one side.
The transition metal ruthenium (Ru) is white and silver in color and is a member of the platinum group. It is inert to most chemicals and is used in the manufacture of thick film resistors, thick film electrical contacts, platinum alloys and catalysts. Extensive use of ruthenium in aerospace and electrochemical industries is the major reason driving the global market expansion. Hard disk devices use ruthenium metal to increase their storage capacity. It is often used as barrier layers, electrical contacts and chip resistors used in the manufacture of microelectronic chips. In addition, ruthenium reduces the possibility of electromigration, which can lead to degradation and disconnection of electronic devices. Ruthenium is mainly used for alloying, but also in small amounts (50% and 40% respectively) in the chemical and electronic industries. Most of these are now used in chip resistors in electronics and were previously mainly used for electrical connections. It is used in anodes in the chemical field to produce chlorine. Rising demand for ruthenium in the chemical industry is expected to drive product demand in the coming years. The process of electroplating base metals with noble metals, such as ruthenium, helps to enhance the aesthetics of the underlying substrate and helps impart additional functionality, such as increased electrical conductivity and surface ductility. It also helps enhance wear and corrosion resistance. Rising usage of ruthenium in the pharmaceutical industry is expected to boost its demand.
