The global Rare Earth Recycling market size is predicted to grow from US$ 3080 million in 2025 to US$ 7534 million in 2031; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 16.1% from 2025 to 2031.
Rare earth metals are widely used in metallurgy, petrochemicals, glass and ceramics, and are an important component of modern high-tech new materials (permanent magnet materials, polishing materials, catalytic materials, etc.). China's high rare earth production has led to the international consensus that China has monopolized the global production and refining supply of rare earth metals, posing a serious supply risk to importing countries. Therefore, various countries have widely carried out research on the recycling and reuse of rare earth metals.
The recovery methods of mineral elements include hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, gas phase extraction and solvent extraction. The recycled raw materials mainly come from electronic waste and other important raw material wastes containing rare earth elements. Technological development has made it more feasible to extract rare earth elements from these materials.
The source of rare earth recycling is basically from scrapped products. The overall process of separating rare earths from terminal scrapped products is divided into the following steps:
First, collect various scrapped products containing rare earth elements; Second, pre-treat the collected scrapped products, including disassembly, crushing, etc.; Third, separate and purify the products after pre-treatment, usually using metallurgical methods and extraction methods; Finally, recycle rare earth metals and rare earth oxides.
At present, the main sources of rare earth recycling are: fluorescent lamps, magnetic materials, batteries, etc., and the three account for more than 75% of the market. Among them, the main sources of recycling waste magnetic materials are: industrial production waste, such as iron filings produced by magnet manufacturing, small magnets from scrapped computer hard drives, large magnets in scrapped electric vehicles and wind turbines, and parts in air conditioners.
In the global industrial chain, Europe, the United States and Japan have strengthened their layout by policy-driven (such as the EU's "Critical Raw Materials Act" and Japan's magnet recycling subsidies). In the future, emerging fields such as wind turbines, hydrogen fuel cell catalysts and medical equipment will release incremental demand.
