Global Plug-in Hybrid Electric Bus Market Growth 2025-2031

The global Plug-in Hybrid Electric Bus market size is predicted to grow from US$ 774 million in 2025 to US$ 1904 million in 2031; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 16.2% from 2025 to 2031.

Plug-in Hybrid Electric Bus use batteries to power an electric motor, as well as another fuel, such as gasoline or diesel, to power an internal combustion engine or other propulsion source. PHEVs can charge their batteries through charging equipment and regenerative braking.

The Plug-in Hybrid Electric Bus (PHEB) serves as a transitional solution in the global shift toward fully electrified public transportation. Unlike conventional diesel buses, PHEBs can operate in pure electric mode for a certain range while using an internal combustion engine for extended mileage. This flexibility makes them ideal for regions with limited charging infrastructure or long-distance transit routes. Currently, PHEBs are gaining traction in Europe, North America, and parts of Asia, where government incentives and low-emission zone (LEZ) regulations encourage the adoption of cleaner public transport solutions.

From a technological perspective, PHEBs primarily use Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) or Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NCM/NCA) batteries, with configurations tailored to specific operational needs. Typically, they offer an electric driving range of 30-80 km, sufficient for daily urban operations, while the combustion engine provides reliability for longer routes. As advancements in solid-state batteries and ultra-fast charging continue, PHEBs are expected to improve in both electric range and charging efficiency, making them even more sustainable.

Market adoption varies by region. In Europe, PHEBs are being integrated into public transit fleets to meet LEZ requirements, whereas in North America, their hybrid nature makes them suitable for long-distance and mountainous routes. While China initially promoted PHEBs, government policies have shifted toward fully electric buses (BEBs), limiting PHEB expansion. However, in Southeast Asia and Latin America, where charging infrastructure remains underdeveloped, PHEBs continue to be a practical choice.

In the long term, PHEBs will face competition from BEBs and Fuel Cell Electric Buses (FCEBs) as battery technology improves and charging networks expand. Nonetheless, they will remain relevant in specific applications requiring extended range or operation in harsh environments. Additionally, integration with V2G (Vehicle-to-Grid) technology and smart scheduling systems will further enhance their operational efficiency and environmental impact.
