Description

The global Oleic Acid (CAS 112-80-1) market size is predicted to grow from US$ 2250 million in 2025 to US$ 3199 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.3% from 2026 to 2032.

Oleic acid is a base oleochemical built around a C18 monounsaturated fatty acid structure with the molecular formula C18H34O2, typically corresponding to the cis double bond at the ninth carbon position. It occurs naturally in vegetable oils and certain animal fats, and is industrially produced through the splitting, hydrolysis, distillation and fractionation of feedstocks such as palm oil, tallow, soybean oil and rapeseed oil. Commercial oleic acid is generally marketed as a pale yellow to colorless liquid fatty acid with favorable lubricity, emulsification compatibility and chemical reactivity. As a core fatty acid intermediate, production is concentrated in Southeast Asia, Europe, China and India, and demand spans personal care, home care, industrial lubricants, metalworking fluids, oilfield chemicals, rubber and plastics additives, pharmaceutical excipients, as well as the manufacture of surfactants, esters, amines and other downstream derivatives.

In 2025, global oleic acid production reached approximately 1.45 million to 1.60 million metric tons, while mainstream FOB prices were generally in the range of USD 1,350 to USD 1,650 per metric ton.

Within the global oleochemical system, oleic acid is benefiting from the combined momentum of renewable feedstock substitution and downstream formulation upgrading. Its expansion is not dependent on a single end market, but rather on a broad mix of recurring consumer and industrial applications. In consumer-oriented formulations, personal care, home care and food-contact related systems continue to shift toward plant-based, milder and more traceable ingredient platforms, supporting stronger penetration of higher-quality fatty acids. In industrial markets, lubricants, metalworking fluids, oilfield chemicals and surfactant intermediates are also reinforcing demand for raw materials that offer reliable sourcing, balanced performance and a stronger sustainability narrative. The continued investment of leading oleochemical producers in fatty acids, esters and specialty derivatives indicates that oleic acid is not an isolated niche product, but a strategic platform intermediate linking natural oils and fats with higher-value downstream chemistry.

The market, however, faces a clear set of structural constraints. Its cost base remains closely tied to palm oil, soybean oil, rapeseed oil and tallow, meaning feedstock volatility can be transmitted rapidly into the fatty acid chain and compress margins for standard grades. In addition, as global brand owners, home care companies and industrial buyers place greater emphasis on supply-chain transparency, sustainable sourcing and regional supply security, competition is shifting away from price and scale alone toward a more comprehensive contest involving feedstock integration, certification systems, product consistency and application development capability. Looking ahead, the global oleic acid market is likely to become more visibly tiered: large-volume standard grades will continue to compete on scale and cost efficiency, while high-purity, low-odor, low-color and sustainability-certified products are expected to benefit more directly from premium consumer formulations and higher-end industrial demand.
