A Frequency Extender is a device or module used to expand the frequency range of measuring instruments like oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, or network analyzers beyond their standard operating range. It is particularly useful in applications involving radio frequency (RF) and microwave systems, allowing users to conduct measurements at higher frequencies than the native capabilities of their testing equipment.

In the field of test and measurement, a frequency extender is an electronic device used to increase the frequency range of a device. It performs frequency conversion by frequency multiplication, heterodyne mixing, or a combination of both.

Frequency multiplication is the process of outputting harmonics of the input frequency through the device, i.e., FOUT = N x FIN. ​This multiplication typically utilizes nonlinear semiconductor circuits to generate harmonics of the signal. The multiplication can be 2, 3, 4, 5, or even 6 or more in multi-stage circuit configurations.

Heterodyne mixing is implemented in a mixer, which mixes a radio frequency (RF) or intermediate frequency (IF) signal with a local oscillator (LO) frequency to produce a new frequency. Typical applications include downconversion (IF = RF ± LO) and upconversion (RF = LO ± IF). More complex applications also involve mixing of signal harmonics.

While mixers or multipliers can be used alone as frequency extenders, in practice, extending the frequency range of modern electronic devices often requires more complex solutions. By combining frequency multiplication and heterodyne mixing, the frequency range can be extended without affecting key device parameters such as output power, stability and dynamic range. This frequency extender can be used in various test and measurement equipment such as vector network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, etc., and is suitable for high-frequency applications such as radar testing, antenna measurement, wireless communication and material characterization.
