The global Electrolytic Manganese Dioxide (EMD) market size is predicted to grow from US$ 1492 million in 2025 to US$ 2286 million in 2031; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.4% from 2025 to 2031.
The impact of the latest U.S. tariff measures and the corresponding policy responses from countries worldwide on market competitiveness, regional economic performance, and supply chain configurations will be comprehensively evaluated in this report.
Electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD) is used in Zinc Manganese batteries together with zinc chloride and ammonium chloride. EMD is commonly used in zinc manganese dioxide rechargeable alkaline (Zn RAM) cells also. For these applications, purity is extremely important. EMD is produced in a similar fashion as electrolytic tough pitch (ETP) copper: The manganese dioxide is dissolved in sulfuric acid (sometimes mixed with manganese sulfate) and subjected to a current between two electrodes. The MnO2 dissolves, enters solution as the sulfate, and is deposited on the anode.
Market Drivers
Battery Industry: The growing demand for rechargeable batteries, such as lithium - ion and nickel - metal hydride batteries, is a major driver for the EMD market. EMD is used as a cathode material in these batteries due to its high electrochemical activity and stability, which helps improve the battery's performance and lifespan.
Ceramics and Glass Industry: EMD is used in the ceramics and glass industry as a colorant and decolorizer. The increasing production of ceramics and glass products, driven by the construction and automotive industries, is expected to boost the demand for EMD.
Water Treatment: EMD is used in water treatment processes to remove heavy metals and impurities. With the growing focus on environmental protection and the need for clean water, the demand for EMD in the water treatment industry is expected to increase.
Market Challenges
Raw Material Supply and Price Fluctuations: The availability and price of manganese ore, the main raw material for EMD production, can have a significant impact on the market. Fluctuations in the supply and price of manganese ore can affect the production cost and profitability of EMD manufacturers.
Environmental Regulations: The production of EMD involves certain environmental risks, such as the discharge of wastewater and waste gases. Stricter environmental regulations can increase the production cost and compliance burden for EMD manufacturers, potentially affecting the market supply.
Competition from Other Materials: EMD faces competition from other cathode materials and alternative technologies in some applications. For example, the development of new cathode materials for batteries may reduce the demand for EMD in the long term.
