CenturyLink: An Asia/Pacific (APAC) Perspective
This IDC Market Note provides an overview of CenturyLink's operations and strategy in the Asia/Pacific (APAC) region. Some of the themes covered in the discussion include CenturyLink's internal transformation and acquisition activities towards a new portfolio of services and solutions, the capabilities that provide competitive advantage, and the successes and challenges experienced in the APAC region. CenturyLink has pushed out from providing network services into other higher value-add services through acquisitions. At the same time, it dropped its capital-intensive datacenter business and now provides both managed security services and network-based security throughout the multinetwork, multicloud environment from edge, to cloud, and on to core. Its specialization in security services at the network layer is a sound strategy given the current challenges being faced by enterprises with cybersecurity.According to Dr. Glen Duncan, Associate Research Director – Datacenter, IDC Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan), "CenturyLink is well on the way to transforming itself from a traditional global network services business to a global technology company with an expansive network, sophisticated cloud, applications, security, and managed services. Incremental strategic acquisitions have significantly accelerated the process. In APAC, the company has steadily built out its footprint and customer base, primarily in response to its global multi-national corporation customers, predominantly in North America. In APAC, its ongoing success will partly be determined by its ability to navigate the challenges of the Chinese market in order to capitalize on the opportunities there."
