Description

The future of global development will be shaped by a new era of overlapping structural transitions: uneven growth recovery, persistent poverty concentration, accelerating climate risk, and rapid technological change. While emerging economies continue to expand faster than advanced nations, the development gap remains wide. Sub-Saharan Africa in particular faces the greatest demographic pressure, with the majority of future global population growth occurring in countries still struggling with infrastructure deficits, low productivity, and limited industrial upgrading.

At the same time, progress on poverty reduction has slowed significantly. Extreme poverty is now increasingly concentrated in fragile and conflict-affected states, while inequality within countries has widened due to unequal access to healthcare, education, and digital connectivity. Over 2.6 billion people remain offline globally, highlighting the scale of the digital divide as a core barrier to inclusive development. Without coordinated investment in human capital and institutional resilience, many low-income economies risk falling further behind in the global technological transition.

Looking ahead, climate and sustainability will define the development agenda of the 2030s. Developing economies require hundreds of billions of dollars annually for climate adaptation and resilient infrastructure, yet financing remains far below required levels. At the same time, the green transition offers opportunities for renewable energy leapfrogging, sustainable industrialisation, and new employment pathways. The future of global development will depend on integrating climate resilience, digital inclusion, and equitable growth into a new development model capable of delivering prosperity at scale.
