Gravity Energy Storage Systems (GESS) are an emerging form of mechanical energy storage that store and release energy by raising and lowering a heavy mass using gravity. When power is needed, the weight is lowered, driving a generator to produce electricity — much like pumped hydro, but without the need for water or elevation.

They are particularly suited for grid balancing, renewable integration, and energy arbitrage.

In order to be able to achieve uninterrupted power supply, Energy Vault first developed a gravity energy storage system, which has better performance and lower costs than pumped water storage and lithium battery storage.
