A thermal anemometer is a device used to measure air velocity based on the cooling effect of air flow on a heated sensor. It operates on the principle that the rate at which heat is removed from a hot object is dependent on the speed of the air passing over it. The anemometer consists of a fine wire or a small thermistor that is electrically heated. As air flows past the heated element, it cools down, and the amount of cooling is used to determine the air velocity.
