Industrial microbiology apply the use of microorganisms in manufacturing of food or industrial products in bulk quantities. Thousands of microorganisms are utilised within industrial microbiology field. Some of these microorganisms include naturally occurring organisms, laboratory selected mutants, or even genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Manufacturing of microbiological products including control of critical raw materials, is governed by regulatory guidelines issued by agencies such as the U.S. FDA, the Japanese Pharmaceuticals & Medical Devices Agency (PMDA), and other agency. Moreover, every country has its own regulations for microbial sampling, and for microorganisms used in food and beverages and other parameters which come under industrial microbiology. Reaction consumables for microbiological reactions include media, reagents and stains, optical adhesive cover kits, applicators, optical caps, strips, and tray sets, among others.
There are four different types of media used in industrial microbiology lab for bacterial growth, which include simple media, complex media, defined media, and specialty media. The most commonly used equipment in the microbiology-based industrial production units include basic instruments such as bioreactors, fermenters, scale-up solutions, filtration pumps & systems, microbial detection systems, air monitoring systems, weigh modular, and others. Laboratory supplies are used for conducting lab-scale experiments pertaining to the microbiological activity, which is later scaled up and conducted at batch scales for production of various microbe-derived and processed products used in various applications. There are number of tests done in microbiology testing of products such as sterility testing, bio-burden testing, environmental testing, etc. Sterility testing is required to ensure viable contaminating microorganisms are not evident in a product. This testing is conducted by direct inoculation or membrane filtration methods and can be performed in an isolator or cleanroom environment.
Market Dynamics
Growing application of industrial microbiology in healthcare & end-use industries, and increasing adoption of inorganic growth strategies by key players are some of the major factors responsible for growth of the South East Asia and South Asia industrial microbiology market. For instance, in September 2016, INFORS HT introduced a new high-performance bench top bioreactor, Minifors-2 for cultivation of microorganisms and perform various biological processes. Minifors-2 is also available in China.
