Pediatric palliative care is specialized medical care for children living with a serious illness. Palliative care focuses on providing relief from the symptoms and stress of the illness. The goal is to improve quality of life for both the child and the family. Pediatric palliative care is appropriate at any age and any stage of illness. It is appropriate for neonates, perinates, infants, children, adolescents, and young adults, and it can be provided along with treatment. Pediatric palliative care addresses serious medical conditions including genetic disorders, cancer, prematurity, neurologic disorders, heart and lung conditions, and others. It relieves the symptoms of these diseases such as pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, constipation, nausea, loss of appetite and difficulty sleeping, anxiety and depression. In short, it helps the child and the family improve their quality of life. Pediatric palliative care is an interdisciplinary collaboration that seeks to improve the quality of life for children with life-threatening conditions, as well as their families. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines pediatric palliative care as the active total care of the child's body, mind and spirit, which also involves giving support to the family. Different drugs most commonly used in palliative care are paracetamol, ibuprofen, morphine, bisacodyl, metronidazole, domperidone, dexamethasone, and diazepam. It is also used to treat serious disorders like chronic diseases such as kidney failure, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), cancer, Parkinson’s disease, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and Congestive Heart Failure (CHF).
Market Dynamics
Increasing new product launches, and mergers and acquisitions by key market players are expected to drive the global pediatric palliative care drugs market growth. For instance, on April 1, 2022, Eisai Co., Ltd., a Japan-based pharmaceutical company announced the acquisition of Arteryex Inc., a Japan-based healthcare blockchain startup, to strengthen and rapidly expand the foundation of its digital solution business. The two companies will work together to develop and provide Personal Health Record (PHR)-related services for patients, healthcare professionals, and society at large.
