Dysphagia is characterized by difficulty swallowing food or liquids. The causes of the disease are large bites of food, insufficient chewing, dry mouth, pills or eating very hot food. Dysphagia treatment involves the use of products that change the texture of food and other products, such as tubes, to facilitate the swallowing process. Although, there are some medications to treat dysphagia, not all conditions can be treated with medication. Dysphagia is the medical name for difficulty swallowing. Swallowing difficulty is the inability to swallow foods or liquids with ease. People who have a hard time swallowing may choke on their food or liquid when trying to swallow. Dysphagia can be caused by functional or structural abnormalities of the oral cavity, pharynx, esophagus, or gastric cardia, and can be acute or chronic depending on the cause. New-onset dysphagia warrants evaluation for esophageal cancer and possibly head and neck cancer, but is also associated with a variety of benign conditions.
