Young Woo and Associates (YWA) and RXR Realty are undertaking the redevelopment of the Pier 57 in New York, the US.
The project involves the redevelopment of the Pier 57 into a commercial facility with office, retail and cultural spaces.
It includes the construction of 44,593m2 of office space, 15,793m2 of open-air public market, a Tribeca Film Festival's (TFF's) permanent outdoor venue on the roof of the pier, a 8,361m2 Contemporary Culture Center on the ground floor of the pier comprising auction, exhibition, gallery and entertainment spaces centered around the contemporary arts, a 2,787m2 beach club on the second floor that will house a pool, spa and outdoor terrace, a 27,870m2 gym in the concrete caissons that support the pier, a 1,486m2 shop of retailer Opening Ceremony, restaurants, an Underwater Discovery Center in one of the pier’s historic caissons, 3,159m2 of public outdoor esplanades around the Pier’s nearly 274m long structure, parking and related facilities and the installation of elevators and safety systems.
Handel Architects LLP has been appointed as architect, and !Melk Landscape Architect and Urban Design as design consultant.
In the first quarter of 2013, the redevelopment plans, including rezoning, were unanimously approved by the Community Board 4, the Manhattan Borough President and the City Planning Commission.
In April 2013, the plans were approved by the New York City Council through New York City’s Uniform Land Use Review Process (ULURP).
In September 2013, YWA renamed the Pier 57 to 'SuperPier'.
In November 2013, the Governor of New York State approved an amendment to the Hudson River Park Act to include office space as permissible uses at the Pier to enhance the project’s potential for public benefit.
In September 2014, YWA partnered with RXR Realty for the redevelopment of the Pier 57.
In December 2015, Google signed a letter of intent to occupy 23,225m2 for its office including lobby and other space primarily on the top two floors. YWA and RXR Realty have also signed a letter of intent with world-renowned chef, author and television personality, Anthony Bourdain, to construct a large public market on the Pier’s main concourse and mezzanine, containing a mix of international and local dining experiences.
In the same month, the New York State approved the redevelopment plans.
Hunter Roberts Construction Group, LLC has been appointed as general contractor for the project.
Construction work underway and expected to be completed by third quarter of 2018.
