Europe’s mature power generation market has not experienced the rapid growth of the developing regions of Asia-Pacific or the Middle East and Africa. Power generation strategies for EU countries are driven by the Energy Efficiency Directive and the Renewable Energy Directive of 2009, which requires members to achieve 20% of their energy needs from renewable sources by 2020. In the UK, coal power stations are scheduled to close by 2025 and Germany has moved away from building new nuclear power stations following the Fukushima disaster in Japan.

Timetric’s Construction Intelligence Center (CIC) is currently tracking power generation construction projects in Europe with a total value of US$871.4 billion. Of this, US$345.6 billion is in the planning stage. The UK accounts for the highest value with US$312.0 billion, followed by Turkey with projects valuing US$95.1 billion. Russia and Poland follow with power generation projects with a value of US$93.3 billion and US$60.7 billion respectively. Europe's highest project investment is in wind power with a value of US$142.9 billion followed by nuclear power with a value of US$91.3 billion. The largest projects currently in the pipeline are the US$35.0 billion East Anglia Offshore Windfarm Development in the UK and the US$25.0 billion Sinop Nuclear Power Plant in Turkey.
