x National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is undertaking the Parwanoo to Shimla highway upgrade project in Himachal Pradesh, India.

The project involves the upgrade of 89.7km, four-lane road from Parwanoo to Shimla under two sections.

The first section includes the upgrade of 38km Parwanoo-Solan road and the second section includes the upgrade of 50km Solan-Shimla road.

It includes the construction of 26km of new road stretch between Kaithlighat and Kufri-Mashobra junction near Shimla to cut short the arduous journey by 17km, 825m one-way tunnel near Barog Bypass, besides two railway over bridges at Sanawar and Barog Bypass and a flyover at Kumarhatti, reducing the distance by 3km.This highway would start from Kaithlighat and would run through Shoghi, Tara Devi hills to join the Junga road.

The project also includes the construction of a grade separator, underpasses and provision, new lane bridges, pedestrian ways, toll infrastructural facilities, infrastructure related facilities, the installation of traffic signal lights and safety systems.

Mein Hardt Engineering Consultants has been appointed by NHAI to provide consultancy services for the preparation of Feasibility and Preliminary Design for the project to be executed as BOT (Toll) project on DBFOT pattern.

On October 20, 2014, NHAI invited tenders from eligible contractors on EPC mode for Parwanoo-Solan road with submission due date on February 24, 2015.

In January 2015, the project obtained environmental approvals from the ministry of environment and forests (MoEF) for 62km road and awaiting 28km stretch passing through Shimla district.

On March 5, 2015, Parwanoo - Solan section secured approval from the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA).

In August 2015, G R Infraprojects limited and URS ScottWilson India Ltd appointed as construction contractors of the first phase.

In September 2015, Construction works are commenced on the project.

On September 27, 2016, tenders were invited for the construction of Solan-Kaithlighat section, with last submission date as November 11, 2016.

As of February 2017, the project is facing delay due to legal issues and construction works on the first phase are kept on hold.

Earlier the project was put on hold due to legal issues; however the project resumed in June 2017.

Construction works are underway and the tunnel is expected to completed by June 2018.
