Ministry of Transportation, Egypt (MoT) is undertaking the construction of a monorail system near Cairo, Egypt.
The project involves the construction of a 52km hanging monorail system and will be developed in two phases.
The first phase includes the construction of 27km monorail and the second includes the construction of a 25km monorail system.
It includes the construction of 17 stations grouped into two phases, with 12 in the first phase and five in the second, construction of platforms, administrative space, support structures and related infrastructure, the installation of signaling and safety systems and the laying of tracks.
Bombardier Transportation Canada Inc., a subsidiary of Bombardier Inc., Orascom construction Industries SAE and the Arab Contractors have been appointed as contractors.
In December 2014, the General Authority for Roads and Bridges (GARB), part of MoT, published a report identifying the monorail project to be the most practical solution towards minimizing congestion within the region.
Shalakany Law has been appointed as legal advisor.
In February 2015, MoT presented the construction plan of the project.
The project is being funded by the consortium of ten banks, they are National Bank of Egypt (NBE), Banque Misr (BM), Commercial International Bank (CIB), QNB Al Ahli, HSBC, Arab African International Bank (AAIB), Bank Audi, Crédit Agricole, and Arab Bank.
The New Urban Communities Authority is set to pay the cost of the project in loan installments over 14 years.
As of February 2017, Canadian Chamber of Commerce has been waiting for the Ministry of Transportation’s decision on the project.
The project involves the construction of a 52km hanging monorail system comprising 17 stations near Cairo, Egypt.
The US$1,500 million project includes the following:
1. Construction of elevated stations
2. Construction of platforms
3. Construction of administrative space
