Multi-Fuel Energy Ltd (MEL), a joint venture between SSE Plc (SSE) and Wheelabrator Technologies Inc. (WT), is undertaking the construction of second Ferrybridge Multifuel power generation facility in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, the UK.
The project involves the construction of a multi-fuel power generation facility with a capacity of 90MW. It includes the construction of a powerhouse, a waste collector unit and other infrastructure-related facilities, the installation of generators, transformers and safety systems, and the laying of transmission lines.
A planning application was submitted to Planning Inspectorate in January 2015 and secured approvals from the Energy Ministry on October 28, 2015.
MEL secured environmental permits for the project in November 2015.
Dalton Warner Davis LLP (DWD) has been appointed as a study consultant; and Hitachi Zosen Inova (HZI) as the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) Contractor. The electrical work contract has been awarded to NATUS GmbH & Co.KG; and the electrical installation contract to a Derbyshire-based company, HCM Electrical Ltd.
SSE appointed ABB Engineering and Consultancy as Construction Design and Management (CDM) contractor in December 2016. The scope of work also includes the decommissioning and demolition work of the project.
Valmet was appointed as automation system supply contractor for the project in January 2017.
Supplementary Project Agreement (SPA) Approval was received on February 8, 2017.
Mostostal Zabrze S.A. (MZ) was awarded US$154 million contract on April 18, 2017, from HZI for the installation works of two steam boilers within the scope of steel structure and related facilities.
Renewi, a joint venture of Shanks and Van Gansewinkeri, was awarded a refuse derived fuel (RDF) supply contract in June 2017. The scope of the contract includes the supply of 50,000 tonnes a year for 20 years.
Construction activities are underway. The project is due to start commissioning from the end of 2018 and will be fully operational by third quarter of 2019.
