The Department of Transport South Africa (DoT) is planning to construct the Moloto Corridor Rail Line project in Mpumalanga, South Africa.
The project will be implemented by Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA).
The project involves the construction of 124km rail line between Pretoria and Siyabuswa connecting rural communities in the western regions of Mpumalanga, Nkangala and Sekhukhune districts of Limpopo.
The project involves the construction of 13 rail stations, new 67km of double track from Siyabuswa to Moloto and the alignment of Mamelodi East and Greenview Pienaarspoort track.
The project also include the construction of bridges, pedestrian ways, new overhead concourse, waiting rooms, and parking facilities, the installation of safety and security systems and the laying of railway tracks.
In November 2012, Vela VKE (SMEC Groups) part of a consortium that includes Deloitte and DLA Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr was appointed as study consultant.
In June 2014, the project was approved by the government.
In the fourth quarter of 2014, PRASA submitted the funding proposal to National Treasury.
On September 7, 2016, PRASA signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) for planning and implementation of the project.
In May 2017, DoT concluded a review and assessment study which included a detailed census to determine current demand.
Subject to all regulatory approvals, the project is expected to take three years for completion.
