Antrim Borough Council (ABC) is planning to undertake the Antrim Town Centre redevelopment project in Northern Ireland, the UK.
The project involves the construction of a 14,000m2 of new retail floor space.
The project includes the construction of a new multi-story car park, redevelopment of shops and premises along Railway Street and Castle Street, redevelopment of the vacant Ulster Bar Corner site, a new bus terminus at Market Square, new entrances to Castle Mall to improve the connections between it and the rest of the town center.
In May 2005, the council published a Master plan for Antrim town center. In November 2007, further plan for the regeneration of Antrim town centre was commissioned by Department for Social Development (DSD).
In April 2010, the Antrim Town Center master plan and delivery strategy was approved by Antrim Borough Council.
Department for Social Development (DSD) appointed GVA Grimely to prepare master plan and delivery strategy for the project.
In June 2010, final master plan for the project was completed.
The master plan proposes improvements not only to the quality of the retail environment, but also to the ease of accessing and using the town center, with improved integrated parking arrangements, a public realm and modern and sizable retail units to prospective national occupiers.
The commercial regeneration of the town will require investment from both the public sector and private developers and retailers.
In May 2012, GVA Grimley prepared a draft Development Brief for Central car park site and was submitted for review by the Central Procurement Directorate (CPD).
In June 2012, the draft documentation was reviewed by CPD and consultation continued on issues surrounding transfer of ownership, valuations and the exact area of the site to be included.
BSG Civil Engineering was appointed as contractor for public realm, which include improvement of public realm in High Street and Church Street including improvements to pavements and kerbs, new street lighting and street furniture, a part of Antrim town center redevelopment project and has been completed.
On October 23, 2015, Karl Development Ltd., a part of Karl group of companies was appointed as developer for the redevelopment of the vacant Ulster Bar Corner site.
Planning activities on the development are underway.
