For instance, low-energy RO membranes have succeeded in delivering high-quality permeate and high productivity with low-pressure requirements. This advance has allowed RO membranes to operate on low-temperature feed water sources that otherwise would require prohibitively high operating pressure.

Further, the report states that one challenge in the market is impact of hard water on cleaning equipment. The presence of calcium and magnesium ions leads to hardness in water. These ions bind, harden, and thicken as their concentrations increase. In water purification systems that use membranes, these ions tend to block the membranes completely. This process is known as the scaling of membranes, and regular backwashing of membranes is required to tackle this issue. For instance, in an RO system, scaling of membranes makes the RO system work even harder, resulting in the wastage of water, additional utility bills, and inefficient water purification.
