Worldwide Cognitive Server Infrastructure Forecast, 2016–2021
This IDC study presents IDC's first forecast of worldwide revenue from servers for cognitive workloads. IDC forecasts that this market segment will grow at a 19.8% CAGR (2016–2021) to a $9.0 billion market in 2021. While many businesses will initially deploy cognitive workloads on general-purpose infrastructure, IDC expects that the performance demands of cognitive workloads will drive users toward accelerated computing environments, servers that are GPU or FPGA powered for example. Vendors that wish to address this segment with new products are advised to engage in market education and, as the market evolves, start developing and marketing such accelerated systems."Servers for cognitive workloads are a fast-growing segment in the server market," said Peter Rutten, research manager at IDC's Servers and Compute Platform Group. "As our data shows, this will be a $9 billion market in 2021. A note for vendors: end users will increasingly be looking for accelerated compute for cognitive workloads — GPU-powered servers, for example."
