Perspective: Dassault Systèmes Analyst Event 2016 — Growing the Platform, Eye on the Future
This IDC Manufacturing Insights Perspective provides the highlights and key analysis from the recent Dassault Systèmes (DS) analyst day in Vélizy-Villacoublay, near Paris, France. The purpose of the event was to provide an overall update on company, product, and industry strategy, developments, and successes. The Euro 2016 soccer/football tournament was kicking off later in the week the IDC team arrived for the annual Dassault Systèmes analyst event and the excitement and security levels in Paris were particularly high. Maybe that was just for the soccer tournament. Regardless, the two-day executive event at DS' headquarters was designed to provide a compelling update on vision, focus areas, industries, and customer successes. The key takeaway: As manufacturers move to a platform approach for product innovation, DS continues to be well positioned for success in this market because it has been focusing on maturing its 3DEXPERIENCE platform for the past 3+ years so that it is open, extensible, and flexible. This is reflected in 15% license growth for the company over the past year, including 14% growth in the United States, 12% in Asia/Pacific, and 11% in EMEA. DS is also looking at new markets, having identified an $8 billion opportunity in digital marketing, project portfolio management, analytics, manufacturing execution systems, civil engineering, and mining. As for the delivery platform, DS made it very clear that the key to success is to give customers the choice to run in-house or run in the cloud. The comments made during the event highlighted that large organizations are currently not interested in moving to the cloud, and that the uptake for cloud applications comes more from start-ups, SMBs, and designers. This is in line with what IDC Manufacturing Insights is seeing in the marketplace, though there are cases of proof-of-concept cloud-based projects from larger organizations.
