IDC's Worldwide Storage for Virtualized Environments Taxonomy, 2015

This IDC study serves as the market taxonomy for the Storage Solutions: Storage for Virtualized Environments report series. IT infrastructure in the 3rd Platform computing era is built around virtualization, and there are clear advantages in these environments to using storage solutions that are specifically designed for virtual computing. As enterprises and service providers alike look to replace aging legacy storage products, they should make sure they understand the different requirements virtual infrastructures put on storage architectures and look to purchase solutions optimized for use in those environments.

"Although many enterprises will maintain legacy storage products for years to come, in the new 3rd Platform computing era, storage for virtual environments will increasingly be looked at as just storage," said Eric Burgener, research director for IDC's Storage Practice. "These systems exhibit performance, scalability, agility, and manageability capabilities specifically in tune with the needs of virtual environments, and their use ensures that customers will get more out of their 3rd Platform infrastructures."
