IDC PlanScape: Planning for Innovation — Learning to Think Ahead
This IDC study describes an approach to developing a multitier planning framework for innovation strategies within the enterprise. It develops strategies for linking innovation goals to the leadership and organizational structure that deliver them — from disruptive innovation to incremental optimizing initiatives. It connects business and IT leaders through a coordinated planning process that emphasizes linking ideation to goals. "IDC believes that CIOs and their business partners are being challenged by a digital future that doesn't have an obvious form — that is, digital transformation comes in all kinds of shapes and sizes, from small incremental changes in how people use their phones to fundamental modifications in how businesses digitally connect to their supply chain partners," says Fred Magee, adjunct research analyst with IDC. "Innovations are the 'tail of the dog' — following behind — and similarly, they come in different shapes and sizes. IDC's innovation strategies framework is intended to help CIOs and CEOs as well as their partners make sense of how to respond to DX with a measured, controlled, and appropriate portfolio of change."
