IBM's HPC Efforts: Navigating a Renewed Emphasis on POWER Technology Within the OpenPOWER World
This IDC Flash discusses the recent moves by IBM that indicate that the firm is broadly redefining its strategy for competing in the global IT sector. By throwing much of its future development emphasis behind the recently stood-up OpenPOWER Foundation, IBM is building a multipartner network of open standard technology and products that promise innovation across the IT ecosystem. Perhaps more important, the decisions made there will translate directly into IBM prospects to reenergize its standing as an HPC supplier. Although it is clear that IBM can produce one of the most impressive processors on the market today, the firm will need the cooperation of a number of OpenPOWER Foundation partners to help it build an effective HPC hardware and software ecosystem. IBM will need to roll out a continual stream of HPC-related technology to bolster its credibility within the HPC community and to demonstrate that the firm's HPC development efforts are not playing second fiddle to the broad R&D requirements of the overall OpenPOWER membership. Please Note: Extended description available upon request.
