HPC Interconnects: New Options Emerging from a Sector in Transition
This IDC Flash discusses new HPC interconnect options in the market. Despite the ability of the HPC supplier ecosystem to deliver ever-increasing rates of computational performance across a wide range of applications, most agree that HPC interconnect capability is becoming one of the most critical, if not the most critical performance determinant in overall HPC utility. To address a broad and growing range of customer requirements for better interconnect performance, some interconnect suppliers, like Mellanox and Intel, are targeting improvements to InfiniBand, while others such as Brocade, Extreme, Cisco, and QLogic are looking at enhanced versions of Ethernet with bandwidth rates that are already challenging InfiniBand counterparts. Finally, there are also a number of new players — or existing players with new technology — that offer additional options for HPC vendors; for example, Arista Networks (formerly Arista), Brocade, and Dell's Force10 are partnering with Chelsio, a new ASIC design firm that supports a broad range of interconnect options over existing Ethernet switches and routers to deliver low-latency fabric technologies for HPC environments. Please Note: Extended description available upon request.
