AWS re:Invent 2018: Setting Up for the Next Chapter of Cloud Leadership

This IDC Market Perspective looks at Amazon Web Services' (AWS') re:Invent 2018 event, which was held November 26-30, 2018, in Las Vegas. The event attracted over 50,000 attendees, hosted over 2,100 sessions, and featured the announcement of over 140 new and enhanced products and services. This document focuses on the key announcements within strategic domains (e.g., AI, hybrid/distributed deployment, core infrastructure, database, and application development/deployment) as well as key takeaways from the overall event."At re:Invent 2018, we saw the number 1 cloud player continue to make life difficult for its competitors — and make vendor selection easier for enterprises — by striving to aggressively add to its lead," according to IDC SVP and Chief Analyst Frank Gens. "The battle for cloud leadership isn't over: the next five years will see twice as much spending on the cloud as in the past 10 years, providing plenty of opportunity for savvy competitors. But, at re:Invent 2018, AWS significantly improved its odds for remaining number 1 in the next chapter of the cloud."
