Key Highlights
  • The SIC5 Instant Payment system is an additional to the Swiss Interbank Clearing (SIC) system launched by SIX and the SNB. The system launched its first phase on November 17, 2023, with necessary technical conditions for immediate payments. The second phase was launched for banks on August 20, 2024. Operating 24/7 and 365 days a year, SIC5 enables real-time fund settlements within 10 seconds and supports account-to-account transactions. By August 2024, nearly 70 banks, representing over 95% of customer payments in Switzerland, were equipped to receive instant payments.
  • Amid evolving consumer preferences, Switzerland is shifting towards a ‘less cash’ society. Switzerland’s near-100% adult banked population, the launch of instant payments, and the growing adoption of mobile payments are reducing the share of cash. Concurrently, the SNB initiated a pilot project in December 2023 to explore the development of a digital currency. The participating banks included Banque Cantonale Vaudoise (BCV), Basler Kantonalbank, Commerzbank, Hypothekarbank Lenzburg, UBS, and Zürcher Kantonalbank. In June 2024, the SNB announced its decision to extend Project Helvetia III, its wholesale central bank digital currency (CBDC) pilot, for an additional two years.
  • The integration of contactless payments into the public transportation system has significantly hastened their adoption. In December 2022, SwissPass, a travel card for public transport, introduced a contactless feature. This enhancement allows users to purchase public transport tickets without the need for cash at all sales points and ticket vending machines. To acquire a SwissPass card, passengers may register online. They can then complete transactions by tapping their contactless card at the payment terminal.
