Argentina Power Market Outlook to 2030, Update 2019 - Market Trends, Regulations, and Competitive Landscape
Argentina’s economy has endured severe depression and external indebtedness in recent years, culminating in a 10.9% (at constant rates) fall in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2002. Economic growth resumed between 2003 and 2007, registering a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 8%, before the global economic crisis caused it to dwindle to a negative 5.9% in 2009. Negative growth rates were also recorded in 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018. The industrial sector is one of the largest contributors to power consumption, which, as the following figure shows, is closely linked to economic growth.
Thermal sources accounted for 67.1% of installed capacity in 2018. Gas accounted for 59.6%, followed by hydropower with 25.5%, oil with 5.6%, and nuclear power with 4.1%. Around 3.3% was contributed by renewable sources, including biopower, onshore wind, and solar PV.
Hydropower and other renewables are together expected to provide 46% of installed capacity by 2030. Hydropower is sourced from conventional dams, small hydropower projects and pumped-storage facilities. The government is already building a number of hydropower projects, which are expected to contribute around six Gigawatts (GW) of new capacity between 2019 and 2030. Renewable sources are also expected to show a high rate of growth over the 2018-2030 forecast period, due to government incentives, installed capacity additions, and untapped renewable power potential.
