Description

Companies in this industry operate pipeline networks for transporting refined petroleum products. Major companies include Buckeye Partners, Kinder Morgan, Koch Industries, and Magellan Midstream Partners (all based in the US), along with China National Petroleum Corporation (China), Saudi Aramco (Saudi Arabia), TC Energy (Canada), and Transneft (Russia).

The global refined petroleum products market is forecast to reach about $3.4 trillion in 2029 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.2%, according to the Business Research Company. Asia Pacific was the largest region in the refined petroleum products markets in 2024. Western Europe was the second largest region in the global petroleum products market.

The US refined petroleum pipeline industry includes about 650 establishments (single-location companies and units of multi-location companies) with annual revenue of about $9 billion.

Transportation of crude oil is covered in the Crude Petroleum Pipelines profile. Refining of crude oil is covered in the Petroleum Refining profile. Recovery of crude oil from wells is covered in the Oil & Gas Exploration & Production industry profile.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

Demand is driven by economic activity and population growth, which drive energy use. The profitability of pipeline transporters depends largely on the volume and efficiency of their operations. Companies that operate multiple pipeline networks may enjoy economies of scale in purchasing. The US industry is highly concentrated: the 20 largest companies account for over 95% of revenue.

PRODUCTS, OPERATIONS & TECHNOLOGY

Major services are transportation of refined petroleum products, including gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and heating oil, as well as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and natural gas liquids (NGLs). Other services include operating booster pumping stations. Many refined petroleum product pipeline operators also own pipelines for transporting crude oil.

Transportation of refined petroleum products accounts for about 98% of the pipeline transportation industry. Other services include transportation of crude oil by pipeline (2%).

Refined petroleum products are carried in pipelines of various sizes, ranging from 8 inches to 42 inches in diameter. The US has about 200,000 miles of pipeline networks that are connected to refineries and chemical plants, according to the American Petroleum Institute (API).

Refined petroleum pipeline companies operate pipeline and storage networks acting as the bridge between petroleum refiners and end users. As part of the midstream process of the oil industry, the pipeline transportation segment delivers refined products to fuel terminals or local distribution centers. Tanker trucks typically are then used to transport products to retail locations. Major end users, such as airports, may have their own terminals on site.

Terminals may have aboveground storage tanks (AST) or underground storage tanks (UST). Contamination at storage sites is a concern. USTs are less commonly installed today because of leakage concerns of highly toxic and flammable materials.
