Description

Organizations in this industry manage endowments and award grants to a variety of recipients; some endow a single entity, such as a museum or university. Major organizations include the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Ford Foundation, the J Paul Getty Trust, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the W K Kellogg Foundation, all based in the US, as well as the Stichting INGKA Foundation (based in the Netherlands), the Al Maktoum Foundation (the UAE), and the Azim Premji Foundation (India).

More than 260,000 foundations were found globally in 2024, according to Julius Baer. The US has the most foundations, followed by Germany and Hungary.

There were more than 50,000 foundations in the US in 2023, according to Statista. Their assets totaled $250,000.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

Demand is driven by a wide range of local, regional, and national problems that impact public policy, civic life, social justice, and various economic, political, and cultural issues. The profitability of individual foundations depends on effective fundraising and strategic investments. Large foundations have advantages in broad donor support and geographic reach, as well as significant investment income. Small foundations can compete effectively by offering flexible philanthropic services that target localized needs. The US industry is fragmented: the 50 largest organizations take in about 40% of overall revenue.

PRODUCTS, OPERATIONS & TECHNOLOGY

Project areas that receive the most money in annual grants include private contributions, gifts, and grants (50%) and trading securities and commodity contracts (40%).

Grantmaking foundations allocate money, monitor the work of recipients, and identify potential grantees for future disbursements. Employees and trustees with subject matter and advocacy knowledge are particularly important to organizations. Potential grantees may submit formal proposals to foundations that describe a project, show budgetary requirements, develop an action plan, and request monetary assistance in the form of a grant.

Foundations may be classified as public or private. Private foundation funds come from an individual, family, corporation, or some combination of these sources. Private foundations with individual or family donors are typically referred to as independent foundations or family foundations, and are the most prevalent type of private foundation, according to Investopedia. Operating foundations, another type of private foundation, also receive assets from an individual or a small group of donors, but most accomplish their charitable purposes by operating their own programs, rather than by making grants.

Public foundations receive funding from multiple unrelated donors, which may include private foundations, individuals, and government grants. Community foundations, the oldest and most well-known type of public foundation, are dedicated to improving the lives of people in a defined local geographic area.
