Description

Companies in this industry manufacture electrical equipment, appliances, and electrical components. Major companies include Energizer Holdings, GE, Hubbell, Rockwell Automation, and Whirlpool (all based in US), as well as Legrand (France), LG Electronics (South Korea), Mitsubishi Electric (Japan), Signify (the Netherlands), Prysmian (Italy), and Siemens (Germany).

Top countries for electrical products manufacture include China, Hong Kong, and the US, according to Investopedia.

The US electrical products manufacturing industry includes about 5,500 establishments (single-location companies and units of multi-location companies) with combined annual revenue of about $120 billion.

Key components of the electrical products manufacturing industry are also addressed in the following industry profiles: Battery Manufacturing; Household Appliance Manufacturing; Industrial Control Products Manufacturing; Lighting Equipment Manufacturing; Motor & Generator Manufacturing; and Switch, Connector & Other Wiring Device Manufacturing.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

Due to product diversity, demand is driven by a number of factors, including consumer income, construction spending, and industrial production. The profitability of individual companies depends on efficient operations, technological expertise, and effective marketing. Large companies have economies of scale in purchasing, production, marketing, and distribution. Small companies can compete by offering niche or specialty products, and through superior customer service. Overall, the industry is concentrated: the top 50 companies account for about 50% of industry revenue.

Electrical product imports, primarily comes from China, Mexico, Japan, Germany, and South Korea. Imports account for about 65% of the US market. Exports account for about 50% of US production. Chief US export markets include Mexico, Canada, China, Germany, and Japan.

PRODUCTS, OPERATIONS & TECHNOLOGY

Major products include switchgears, commercial and institutional-type electric lighting fixtures, general-purpose industrial controls, and household refrigerators which all account for less than 5% each.

Most appliance makers produce the body of their product from steel and plastics; they buy components like electric motors, compressors, heat elements, and controls from suppliers. Manufacturing operations consist largely of shaping metal in stamping presses with custom-built dies and assembling components. Steel, either cold-rolled, hot-rolled, or galvanized, is the major raw material. Plastics are used in making vacuum cleaner parts, as an insulating material in other products, and for the interiors of refrigerators. Painting operations are part of most manufacturing plants. Manufacturers generally produce several models of a particular product in long production runs to achieve economies of scale.

Communication and energy wire and cable are made primarily from copper and aluminum using highly automated processes.

Major switch, connector, and wiring device products include switches and electrical circuitry and wire connectors. Other products include lampholders, power outlets, plug caps, connector bodies, and lighting arrestors. Current-carrying wiring devices are primarily used to switch, regulate, or distribute electrical power. Applications are chiefly for distributing and regulating electrical power within a residential or nonresidential building. Some products have automotive or other industrial applications. Products are made using purchased commodity materials including aluminum, brass, bronze, copper, nickel, plastics, elastomers, and petrochemicals.

Leading lighting equipment product categories are residential and nonresidential lighting fixtures and lamp bulbs and parts. Lighting fixtures consist of metal, glass, and plastic products in various decorative styles. Lamp bulbs consist primarily of incandescent, fluorescent, light-emitting diode (LED), and three types of high-intensity discharge (HID) bulbs: metal halide, sodium, and mercury vapor. Raw materials for lamp bulbs include glass, tungsten, copper, and inert gases such as argon and nitrogen. Lighting fixture manufacturers use steel, aluminum, copper, brass, and plastics as components of finished products.

Major battery product categories are storage batteries and primary batteries. Storage batteries (also called secondary batteries) are rechargeable; primary batteries are discarded after the initial stored energy is consumed. Examples of storage batteries are automotive and laptop computer batteries. Primary batteries include standard dry cell batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, and 9-volt). Raw materials include heavy metals such as lead, nickel, and zinc.

Major industrial control products include electric and electronic relays, industrial motor starters and controllers, magnet and solid-state control circuit devices, industrial control rheostats, industrial solenoid switches, mechanical and solid-state timing devices, and electromagnetic brakes and clutches. Other products include flow actuated electrical switches, crane and hoist controls, and marine auxiliary controls. Companies may also offer integrated systems that combine hardware, software, and communications components to control customers' industrial and manufacturing processes.

Fractional horsepower motors (fractions of one horsepower) and integral horsepower motors (multiples of one horsepower) are the largest motor and generator product categories; other products include "prime mover" generators (powered by prime movers like diesel or steam engines); and motor-generator sets. Most motors and generators are sold to industrial users (both as components in product manufacture and for industrial process use), as sources of power for industrial use, and as emergency electrical sources for commercial users.
