Poland's defence spending is high on a regional comparison, with the country spending above the NATO 2.0% ofGDP target. The unveiling of the Technical Modernisation Plan, which covers acquisitions across military branches over the period2021-2035, will ensure heightened spending going forward. The primary driving force behind Poland's continued defenceexpenditure is its proximity to Russia, which it views a geopolitical threat. Poland is a key regional ally of the US and the presence ofAmerican troops in the country is set to rise. Moreover, the US is an important source of military hardware for Poland, as the countrydoes not have the means to produce all of its equipment domestically. Poland is also seeking to expand the size of its nationalarmed forces through the creation of a new army battalion and a volunteer force.
