Jordan Defence & Security Q1 2018
BMI View: Jordan's defence budget will continue increasing in both absolute terms over the coming years, as the country continues to face elevated security challenges, resulting in a need to increase its armed forces capabilities and to modernise its efforts. However, defence spending will gradually decline as a share of GDP following exceptional spending in 2016-2017, especially as the threat posed by IS declines and the government undertakes fiscal consolidation, but will remain high around 5.8% of GDP. Thus, whilst little investment will be focused on the development of the domestic defence manufacturing sector, much of the spending will open up opportunities for countries and new defence trade partners to contribute to Jordan's efforts to increase its capabilities.
