Germany Defence and Security Report 2015
BMI View: Germany possesses one of Europe's largest defence sectors. The country is a major exporter ofmateriel around the world. Germany enjoys a reputation as a reliable supplier of high-quality defenceequipment and subsystems. This is particularly evident in the land and naval systems domain. Historically, the domestic demand for German armaments has been outstripped by export sales. Furthermore, since theend of the Cold War, domestic demand for materiel has contracted significantly as German politicians anddefence planners have been quick to exploit the so-called 'peace dividend' by reducing the size of the armedforces.
However, following several years of defence expenditure reductions, Germany will begin increasing itsdefence spending in 2015, and is expected to sustain defence spending increases up to the end of the decade. This is prompted by two trends; the first of which is the need to overhaul and modernise equipmentcurrently in service with the German armed forces to ensure that it is fit for purpose. The second factorprompting Germany's increase in defence spending is the country's growing participation in out-of-areaoperations in support of multilateral military operations.
