Direct Laser Writing (DLW) uses laser beam to create a controlled localized damage on the surface. The pattern is drawn in CAD program, which then is etched on the surface of material by a laser spot. In a typical setting, the laser spot is fixed, while the sample is moved under the beam. To prevent overwriting, the beam is switched off with shutters. DLW has been increasingly selected as a microfabrication route for efficient, cost-effective, high-resolution material synthesis and conversion. Concurrently, lasers participate in the patterning and assembly of functional geometries in several fields of application, of which electronics stand out.Laser direct writing technology is a kind of micro/nano processing method with no mask, wide application range and high cost performance ratio. At present, it has been widely used in micro/nano manufacturing fields such as MEMS, mask, Microfluidics, micro/nano optical devices, Metamaterial, etc. In the field of advanced IC packaging, mask lithography technology is the mainstream technology applied in the industry. However, due to the limitations of mask lithography in alignment flexibility, large-scale packaging, and automatic coding, pan semiconductor equipment manufacturers have applied laser direct writing lithography technology to advanced packaging fields such as wafer level packaging in recent years. Laser direct writing equipment is a high-tech product with wide application and market potential. In the future, with the continuous innovation of technology and the continuous expansion of the market, its development prospects will be even broader. There exist two challenges in traditional DLW for a considerable period. The first one is how to increase fabrication resolution of DLW to nanoscale in order to cater to the need of nanofabrication. Another one refers to make DLW applicable to various acceptor materials (resists) rather than only organic photoresist. Due to limitation of diffraction limit in an optical system, the traditional DLW developed along the existing technology trajectory is hard to overcome the difficulties mentioned above. For resolving this, developing new type of DLW with more powerful function become necessary and urgent. The new generation laser direct writing (New-Ge DLW) successfully overcomes shortcomings of the existing DLW and furnishes a variety of new opportunities to explore novel fabrication technologies and methods. It should be stressed that here the New-Ge DLW refers to traditional DLW based on a new principle of laser-matter non-linear interaction, not including femtosecond DLW (FsDLW) that has formed a single branch owing to its high-speed development and enormous difference in features from the traditional DLW. The expanded capability of lasers to participate in multiple fabrication steps at different implementation levels, from material engineering to device processing, indicates their future applicability to next-generation electronics, where more accessible, green microfabrication approaches integrate lasers as comprehensive tools.
