National Survey of Professional Development Trends: 2012-2013

For the purpose of EMR’s latest survey, “professional development” was defined for the respondents as including “all staff development or in-service training - district, building, or commercially provided - for teachers or administrators that relates to improving teaching methods, classroom management, assessment, using technology, etc.”

Conducted this Fall it shows, among other things, that more of the professional development budget is being allocated to consultants and coaches this year compared to two years ago.  Looking at the big budget and spending numbers, the percentage of dollars going to outside resources, including consultants and conferences, has increased as a share of total spending.  Although the pie has not grown much since EMR's prior survey in 2010, the indications are that the market size for consultants, coaches and conferences will rise over the next 2-3 years.
It is also interesting to note that the federal contribution to professional development funding is way up, while the state contribution has fallen significantly compared to EMR's 2010 survey findings.
