Richard K. Miller & Associates Inc. was founded in 1972 as a consulting engineering firm. Originally, the firm provided engineering analysis and design consultation to over 350 clients internationally. Included within these 350 clients, are 52 Fortune 500 companies and five federal agencies. The firm has also served as a consultant to several corporate clients on strategic planning and provided support towards implementation of emerging technologies. From this original focus, the company began to specialize in market research.

The 1980s were an especially fruitful time for the firm as this is when it began to pioneer market research studies on robotics, interactive multimedia and virtual reality. The firm was ahead of the curve as these fields were not commercially popular at the time.

The firm was somewhat omnipotent as in 1986, it advised its readers of the expected development of the Internet (then called ARPANET).

Having published over 10,000 market research publications since its inception, Richard K. Miller & Associates Inc. has become one of the leading analyst firms in the United States. Many of the firm's annual studies are the number one best selling publications in their field.
