Analysis by Region - Emerging Markets - Tanzania
Description
Tanzania is set to hold its general elections on October 29, with the ruling CCM seeking to extend its six-decade rule. President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who rose to power in 2021 as vice president following the death of John Magufuli, is now seeking her first mandate through the ballot box. Her tenure has been marked by economic stability and early steps to open the democratic space, but in the past year, she has faced criticism for rolling back reforms. Her main rival, Tundu Lissu, remains jailed on treason charges, while his party, Chadema, the principal opposition, has been barred from participating. We expect Ms Hassan and the CCM to win comfortably; the real question is by what margin. See here for our election scenarios.
