Description

We forecast the Sierra Leonean economy to expand at a solid clip this year, buoyed by a resilient services sector and improvements in agricultural productivity. That said, global trade uncertainty still presents downside risks – President Donald Trump imposed a 10% import tariff on Sierra Leone's exports to the US, despite the West African nation having a bilateral trade deficit of $87.3m with the US in 2024. According to US Census Bureau data, the bulk of the US's imports from Sierra Leone in 2024 were diamonds, accounting for over 39% of the total during the year. While the global diamond industry remains stagnant due to downbeat rough diamond prices and the rising appeal of synthetic diamonds, we expect the West African nation's external balances to face challenges over the medium term.
