Description

Malawi's economic woes have continued unabated since the beginning of the year. A combination of external funding cuts, depleted FX reserves, unsustainable public debt, and elevated inflation has placed the economy under immense strain. We anticipate that the Malawian authorities will resort to a currency devaluation in Q2 2026 to address the economic malaise. As such, we project that the average exchange rate will rise from MK1,733.99/$ in 2025 to MK2,408.12/$ in 2026 as the currency depreciates.
