Glyoxal (OHC–CHO) is the dialdehyde that is the smallest possible and which consists of ethane having oxo groups on both carbons. It can be obtained from several natural sources such as from the oxidation of lipids or as a by-product of biological processes. Commercial glyoxal is prepared either by the gas-phase oxidation of ethylene glycol in the presence of a silver or copper catalyst (the Laporte process) or by the liquid-phase oxidation of acetaldehyde with nitric acid. Glyoxal appears as yellow crystals melting at15°C. Hence often encountered as a light-yellow liquid with a weak sour odor. Vapor has a green color and burns with a violet flame.
The two adjacent carbonyl groups make glyoxal highly reactive. It is used as an intermediate in the formulation of chemicals such as glyoxylate, imidazole, methyl imidazole, metronidazole, and allantoin, among others. Glyoxal has wide area of application including wood adhesive, pesticide, an agrochemical, an allergen, Antiwrinkle agents, as a binding, paint & coating, building construction, Cleaning washing, disinfectant, organic compound in food & beverage packaging, footwear, and garments. Also works as an intermediate for different kind of drugs such as pyrazinamide, vitamin A series, and a variety of antibiotics in the pharmaceutical industry
